Qandle Qadir, originally from Shaker Hts. Ohio, obtained
her BFA at CalArts. Afterwards, she moved back to Ohio’s rust belt to pursue a life of art and design.
In 2005 she took the plunge and quit her day job. She quickly began
exhibiting and selling her work in art museums and galleries around the country.
“Many of my designs are inspired by the old steel mills, rails, bridges and industrial ports
that define the ‘working’ landscape of this region.
These now abandoned sites are particularly interesting
to me in the context of modernity. As industry gives way to technology, these structures give way to human neglect. They become
the property of the elements and this is where both intellectually and aesthetically they become fascinating subjects.
I
aim to balance aesthetics and wear ability with ideas and thoughts.”

In The Studio
The work that I do is hand crafted, primarily in sterling silver.
Most of the tools that I use are simple tools - basically the same tools that silversmiths have been using for centuries.
The physical process of creating my art is as important to my work as the ideas that inspire them. There
are all kinds of advanced technologies that would save time and cut a lot of corners.
I love those "corners"
too much to cut them! The challenges of creating various shapes and textures using a hammer on a flat sheet of silver
is far to appealing to give way to cheating.
I take a great deal of pride in my craftsmanship as well as my service
to my customers:whom I like to think of as my friends.
